THE MBE REVOLUTION

Economic Engines that Drive Mission-Based Movements

One question comes up nearly every day on our hotel campus at the Portland Airport Quality Inn and Suites and the Rodeway Inn.

“Does your church own all this?” Our simple answer is “Yes.

Since our church bought these neighboring hotels in Portland, OR, we have touched the lives of tens of thousands of people. We have a new “congregation” every night, including hotel guests, coffee shop customers, and neighbors with practical needs who watch us live out the Gospel through acts of hospitable service.

Through our church (that owns the hotel and meets in the hotel conference center), we are transforming our community and seeing the lives of people changed.

Through our hotel business model, we have helped fund a recovery center, a homeless shelter, a job-training program, and many other ministries.

This book is a story of hopes and dreams come true. It is a journey of faith and a discovery of identity. It opens the door to a world of true prosperity that the Church has almost forgotten still exists.

This book is an invitation for you to follow the same path.                         —Eric Bahme

ENDORSEMENTS

“The purpose of every endeavor should be to create an example of excellence in a community. Throughout my conversations with Pastor Eric, I believe he has crafted a model for churches and non-profits that will revolutionize their mission and maximize their impact. Not only does his church serve the community with excellence, but it has also answered the question of sustainability and profitability.”

Horst Schulze
Current President and CEO, The West Paces Hotel Group, Atlanta
Founding President and COO of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company

“In The MBE Revolution, author Eric Bahme has recaptured a vision for church composition that has its foundation in the early stages of Christendom. The Council of Nicaea required that every assembly under the leadership of a Bishop had to provide a hospice for travelers seeking rest. Every ministry and church leader, even those not in a position to adopt this model, should read this book. It will open hearts and minds to ideas that are bound to have a transforming impact in community and culture throughout the days ahead. I commend Eric for his courage to lead by example and for his dedication to record his journey along the way.”

“All too often the fundamentals that enable a business to function successfully and profitably are shunned by the not-for-profit world—as if the very thought of making a profit was a disgrace to the mission and values of the organization. Without a powerful economic engine to drive and sustain it, no organization can survive to achieve its vision and realize its true potential.”

Sheldon Harris,
Former President, Cold Stone Creamery

“As a Harvard MBA and pastor, I have longed for the day when strategic thinking and clear leadership would be the engine that ran every local church. My leadership dreams have now been fulfilled; The MBE Revolution is the perfect paradigm for 21st century ministry. Eric Bahme has reminded us that the Church is not a self-sufficient island unto itself, but is a God-ordained investor—in both souls and finance. As we put the principles in the book into place within local church strategic plans, we will see a whole new level of community outreach, evangelistic fulfillment, and the needed prosperity to back it up. Go Church!”

Bishop Harry R. Jackson, Jr.
Senior Pastor of Hope Christian Church in the Washington DC area
Founder and President High Impact Leadership Coalition

The MBE Revolution...is just like Eric Bahme: way outside the box! In fact, I think Eric doesn't even know what a traditional box looks like. Inside these pages you will encounter some ideas so radical that they could have come right off the pages of the New Testament—and in fact they did. You will read stories of transformed lives that will bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart. And you will encounter the business wisdom of Proverbs translated into the 21st century. But the thing I found so inspiring was Eric's heart and passion. He has the heart of a great pastor the eyes of a prophet. I have walked with him through the birth of his vision until it became Eastside Church. I have witnessed his congregation embrace this God-given vision and adopt his same passion to change the world. If you want to make a difference in your world as a leader, then this book is a must-read!”

Dr. Ted Roberts
Founder of Pure Desire Ministries International

“Eric Bahme has put his finger on an issue that needs to be addressed. It is unfortunate that too many pastors allow their dreams for ministry to be squelched. There is extensive content in this book that will encourage pastors to live out their dreams. This book will challenge pastors to look for opportunities where a for-profit business can help fund a non-profit ministry.”

Dr. Billy A. Melvin, Executive Director
National Association of Evangelicals

“Many entrepreneurs subscribe to the old adage that we should endeavor to do good as we do well, but it is truly rare to find a model that successfully entwines these objectives. The MBE Revolution accomplishes this brilliantly. The ideas herein are sure to become an inspiration and an important resource for all those who are passionate about managing a successful business that makes the world a better place.”

“Eric Bahme brings both evangelical passion and entrepreneurial purpose in a well-designed manual for economic self determination. The MBE Revolution is nicely flavored with stories, examples and meaningful direction.”

“This book hit home for me because some of my very first clients at HEASLEY & PARTNERS were churches that wanted to reach out and connect with their communities. It was a noble goal, but few were prepared to fully embrace the branding and business concepts I would share. That is until now! Finally, we have a book that helps churches understand that they are businesses not charities. Thank you, Eric Bahme, for putting this important truth into a book well worth reading.”

“Funding a non-profit ministry with a for-profit business; Eric Bahme’s MBE Revolution is exactly what the title implies: revolutionary! I’m so proud that this dream was birthed in our Foursquare family. This bold, visionary approach to business and ministry is gripping; a valuable resource that belongs in the hands of every ministry leader.”

Glenn Burris, Jr.
General Supervisor of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel

“Eric Bahme’s passion is contagious. His zeal extends far beyond his own personal area of influence by inviting others to partner with him in an eternal cause that is limitless in scope. By no means are you left in the clouds. Pastor Eric’s words bring a certain focus and clarity to the process of crafting your own vision. In the end, you are left with the tools to initiate and a foundation of confidence upon which to build your mission.”

Dr. Bryan E. Crute
Founder/Senior Pastor

"My uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said: “If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.” Pastor Eric Bahme has written a book that will help us recapture that zeal and refocus on those who need us most: the helpless, hopeless and forgotten. I am very excited to see what God will do with those who embrace the principles in this book in America’s forgotten urban communities."
